No, I won’t write your script
Programming around the internet is considered the “cool” thing to do. Everyone wants to do it, especially those wishing to establish a presence on the internet, unfortunately for us true coders, we are plagued by those who would have us code it for them and they to take the credit. This problem seems especially rampant on CodingForums.com, where daily the PHP forum gets posts such as:
…”you see i don’t want to make it because i am not very good at php unless it involves forms or reading and writing files. Anyone know where i could locate such a program and if not could someone please make one for me?”
Note that this user did not ask for an example to get started. He did not post that he could not find what he was looking for on Google. No, he asked someone to find one for him, or make one for him. Make one for him, not an example. I find myself wishing to click a nice, shiney ban button, preferably polished and ready for use.
I once coded an in depth example for one person (which worked flawlessly), and he replied back that he was getting errors. He posted the code and it appeared he had mauled the code implementing it into a page, took off my comment, and changed a few variable names (forgetting many). Once again, I find myself wishing for the shiney ban button.
Another person bids for jobs, then asks for help coding the project he receives. Yet another demanded we provide him with examples or he would contact the “FIB” for not following the “fredom of infomation thing”. Besides a ban button, I find myself wanting a brick.

Now although I’ve never really helped many people by spending time to write long code examples, I can see the frustration. All I can say is I see the problem, and I’m sorry to hear it. Actually when ever I read posts like can you do it for me, I usually attack the users over the forums, hehehe. Well, anyways, all I can say is, for people who are staying learning like me, thank YOU! All your posts are great for us!

Not on the topic of this specific entry, you sir, have enlightened me to an extent.
If you do not mind, I shall post my story here:
This person posts a thread on a forum for a game (Notrium), asking how to mod, I reply to him with information on where he can get everything he needs (or possibly get without me explaining in detail, for that matter) to start modding.
He creates a NEW thread instead of replying to the old one, and says ” Ok i looked at the Faq and i must say DAMM! its complitcated i got barebones mod whatever that is i know how to edit the dat files among other basic computers functions what i wanna know is how to create weapons maps terrian monster ect any help would be aprecceated if u can read this HELP ME!!!! PLZ!!!….”
I then proceed to explain to him the rather simple task of making a weapon and implementing it, and once more he is befuddled.

Sounds pretty typical to me, people want but they do not want to put any effort into understanding a problem or learning. I wonder if they ever realize that on the topics they ask something to do something for them (that isn’t a quick example to get them started) never get replied to?
And totally unrelated, but I need to write a blog article.

When it’s obvious to me that they want me to write their script for them, I will generally explain to them that the purpose of [insert sub-forum name] is not to do the coding for them but to help them just enough so they can do the work themselves. However, it isn’t always obvious what they’re after.
Case in point: I used to hang out in a PHP website search engine script forum, where someone expressed an interest in doing a database search engine script. I explained the difference between the two to the forum poster, then told him I had developed a database search engine script and would be happy to send it to him to use as an example to begin writing his own.
You can probably already tell where this is headed. He asked me a few questions about how my script was organized, which I happily answered. After all, I hadn’t written any documentation for the script at the time, so I knew he needed help understanding it. Unfortunately, the questions got more and more stupid as time went on, and it became clear to me that what he really wanted was for me to do the work for him. Huh?!
I had a hard time writing that final reply to him, I was so angry, but I managed to keep a civil tongue while at the same time telling him that I wouldn’t write his script for him, and to please take a long walk off a short pier.
